Influence on the Right to Think

Hearing the phrase “having the right to think” sparks my thoughts on many levels. The first time hearing this I didn’t really think much of it. It never crossed my mind that some people could be denied of this. To me, it seems very natural. I completely agree with Tori’s example of baby’s thoughts. When babies start to grow up they do not think about what is good for others. They want what is good for them and that is all they think about and people cannot influence this.

Just like Robyn said, we cannot control what other people think but I semi-disagree because other people can influence our individual thoughts. Our lifestyles and what we are involved in control the way we think. People in different cultures, clubs, sports, religions, and groups of friends have extremely different views on things. The people that we are with greatly affect the way we perceive things. Other people can put thoughts into your head from comments they make or ideas that they believe in. Mostly if you are close with someone with thoughts completely different than yours, your views can change from time to time and sometimes even subconsciously.

Through reading Inherit the Wind I realized that no matter where people come from or what their beliefs are, they should be allowed the right to think. You may come across people who are trying to change your beliefs on a certain topic, but it is personally your choice to agree or disagree. Teaching evolution should not have been illegal because clearly it is the students’ right to think and have their own opinions just like we have today.
