The right to think is like its name suggests is a right that everyone has. The belief that every ones thoughts are valid and that no one can stop you from believing what you want has been around in our society since the time of the ancient Greeks. They belived in their philosohpers almost as much as their government. But several times in history that right has been thrown away by countless rulers and govenrments like the inqusitions or the brutal regiems of Hitler and Stalin. Now most americans belive that these things only happen in other countries and never happen here. They do not realize that America did not rise above suppressing the right to think. There were the Alien and Sedition acts that stopped free speech and more recently the Butler Act. The butler act was a law that was instated in Tennesse from 1925 to 1967. Basicly the said that it was illegal to teach evolution in school to students. This created vast amounts of anger and outrage from people everywhere. Then in 1925 one schoolteacher in Tennesse named John Scopes stood up and expressed his right to think by teachin Darwins theory in his classroom. He was imeadiatley aressted. His trial attracted huge amounts of media attention and drew some of the greatest lawyers of their time to his trial. After two sweltering days he was charged gulity and fined. But during the trial the tide was turned so much aginst the prosectuion that the law was never actually upheld aftr the trial. Ever since the right to think has never really been challenged by the law in America though there are still some who whish to silence others there is always those who are there to fight aginst the narrow mindedness and to keep their minds wide open.
