Inherit The Wind: This was a surprising book to me. The events that occurred are not what surprised me, my reaction did. I did not think I was going to like this book at first, but once it got further into the storyline I enjoyed reading it. It has an interesting concept along with the suspenseful chain of events. I also liked how the characters all had such distinct traits that shaped the story. Such as with Brady and Drummond, I liked Drummond’s traits and personality over Brady’s because he was more relatable and the underdog that defied what was expected.
My Antonia: I agree with Matt and Missy that My Antonia was my least favorite book that we read. I struggled to find the meaning for some parts in the novel and it was difficult to read because I could not relate to it. There wasn’t really a climax or any suspense to urge you to keep reading so I found it hard to stay motivated or interested for that matter. The part of the book I enjoyed most was "The Hired Girls" because it contains most of the interesting events out of the whole book. Willa Cather wrote very descriptive information about the environment and about the characters throughout the story which was one of my favorite aspects of the novel.
The Catcher in The Rye: In my opinion, The Catcher in The Rye was the most enjoyable book that we read all semester. Holden is a character that is easy to relate to, being around our same age and all, so it was interesting to hear his thoughts and opinions on life in general. I liked the moments in the story when you could just barely see through Holden’s nonchalant and careless attitude to his true self that really does care. His personality carried the story and kept me interested because everything he does is so sporadic. The only aspect of this book that I did not like was Holden's repetitiveness with his word choice. Other than that, I liked reading about his interesting life and experiences.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: I was fairly surprised at my feelings towards this Shakespeare play. It was actually comical and interesting and this is not what usually comes to mind when I think of Shakespeare’s work. I enjoyed the plot of the love square and playful tone each character possessed throughout the storyline. Like Missy said, the story could be a little strange at points but I think it added personality to the play. This shows a more creative side of Shakespeare and proves diversity of his writing.
First They Killed My Father: This novel really did have a significant impact on me. It has such an inspiring story and it was very hard for me to put this book down. At many parts it was harsh and cruel, but Loung dealt with it so graciously that it wasn’t too difficult to read. I could never imagine being put through what she went through and that just adds on to the impact of the story and makes me appreciative of what I have. I have to admit it was hard to read at times because of the torturous incidents but the happy ending and knowing that Loung is alive and well today made it all worthwhile.
