I don’t believe the right to think is something we have ever been without; it was just that we couldn’t express our opinions freely. We’ve been allowed to think an idea that might go against what others want you to believe and so you would stop the thought in its tracks knowing you shouldn’t be thinking it, but now you don’t have to stop the thought. I personally am glad to have the right to think/express our opinions, but I disagree with Erik because I think eventually the right to think would have been challenged even if it had taken longer. I also am glad we have the right because I find it interesting to know other opinions, especially in an argument because like Cates says in Inherit the Wind, you can’t argue without knowing the opposing side. Without having the right to think we would never change like Kristen talked about with how other countries are afraid to change and listen to others opinions. As Priya said in the 1920s you would be considered a sinner in town for thinking thoughts that went against what people considered to be correct, but I don’t feel like people take advantage of the fact the we have the right now to listen to opinions. Most people these days don’t care enough, we have to keep in mind, like Kristen said, that we have this right and we should continue to use it instead of taking it for granted so much. I had never really thought of the right to think before reading Inherit the Wind because I never really realized it was something I should not take for granted, it was something I was born with just like breathing. But like the right to think, some people are born unable to breath and for the rest of their lives they don’t take it for granted and we should never take the right to think for granted just because we are born with it. This play has definitely taught me to realize I have this right that the United States takes for granted. Hopefully though one day more people will realize its importance.
