The right to think is a privilege that all Americans have but most of them have never taken the time to think about. Those who have thought about it have probably realized that it is not as much the right to think anything we want, because as Gunnar said, it would be impossible to control what you think or don’t think, but it is more of the right to express what you are thinking. It gives you the right to your own opinion on everything and allows you to reasonably act on the situation in whatever way you think is appropriate.
Even though people think the privileges everyone had in the 1920s was so different from today, there really hasn’t been that big of a change. In the 1920s, you had the right to think about most things. Maybe people wished they had more of a say in other matters that seemed important to them but they all could voice their opinion and react on daily obstacles. Today, there are still certain things we can’t change about how the country is run and what some people believe. Even though we don’t have the power to change it, we have the right to think about it and throw an idea out there.
Like Matt said, students are affected the most by the right to think. Every single day they are asked for their own opinion on a certain matter. No matter what response they give, it is accepted and thought about in the minds of all that heard. Also, most teachers teach different things about the same subject. They all have similar but different point of views and they have the right to think and the right to their own opinion.
I think whoever comes up with the laws saying what you are not allowed to think about and what you are allowed to voice your opinion on has too much power. It makes it seem like the entire country is ran according to only a few opinions. Like Nick said, there is no right or wrong answer when you have the right to your own opinion and you should not be judged according to others’ opinions being compared to your own.
I’ve never though about the right to think, let alone realized you needed to have a right to think, before reading Inherit the Wind. I think the author made his point in a creative way making the reader apply everyone’s opinions to the real world. It makes me realize that some people still don’t have the privileges that we do in America.
