I haven’t really ever thought about the right to think. It’s not exactly a topic that comes up too often. Like Dominique said, we as Americans have always had the privilege to think. No American would ever think that something as simple as not being able to speak your thoughts could even happen. Not a lot of people actually think about thinking, they just do it. And there really is no way that someone can take that away from you. Therefore, like what Nick said, you will always be able to think for yourself and make your own decisions in life.
I also agree with Claire and Spencer. Back in the “olden days” you would think that people didn’t have the right to think, however, they all did. The people just couldn’t speak what they thought because they knew that something bad would happen to them. A good example of this would be like in Inherit the Wind. John Scopes (Bert Cates) spoke what he thought of about evolution, and after, he was put in jail. Furthermore, he had to have a huge trial because the whole city thought that he was an atheist/the devil. But in the end, thankfully, everything turned out pretty well.
Lastly, I have to agree with Patty about not ever really thinking about thinking until I read Inherit the Wind. Once again, no one thinks about thinking. Everybody does think because they have never not been able to. However, I also disagree with Patty because she states that we haven’t always had the freedom to think for ourselves. As I stated before, I feel that we have. Though we may not think we did, I’m sure we did, we just couldn’t express ourselves like we do today. Today we can state out own opinions, and no one can punish us for doing so.
