Thinking

When I first heard of the right to think, I instantly compared it to our freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a step further into our independence because not only are we allowed to think original thoughts, we can now express them freely. It is our independent and unique thoughts that make us who we are, its our rights that give us the freedom to become different people.
Although even if we were not granted the right to think, there is nobody who is able to stop you from the thoughts that you are thinking. You are the only person who can control your thoughts. Like John said, thinking is what makes us all human. It is the right to express our thoughts that is truly important. Now under law, we can think and speak our thoughts with out being tried under a court of law. This is part of the benefits of being an american citizen, we have the opportunity to form one-of-a-kind thoughts no matter how strange or unaccepted they may be.
Before I read Inherit the Wind I took the right to think for granted, forgetting that the concept was not accepted in the 1920s. Like Taylor and Dominique said, the right to think is a privilege. Even though the right to think was not popular back then, I didn't think it would enough to be put on trial for having an improper thought. In fact I was not even aware of the concept of having the right to think. I had heard of Freedom of speech, which i also take for granted, but i did not think that my life would be affected by the right to think. I think tons of thoughts everyday, most thoughts people would argue with, but i never second guessed my ability to think these thoughts.
After I read this book I realized that not everyone believes that thoughts should be made openly. Many people, especially back then, believed that there should only be one thought. People often judge the idea of a different thought, and are not open the concept of having multiple views. People are slowly learning to respect other people's thoughts and ideas. Today people have a variety of different views on almost everything. People all over america have the right to fight and stand up for what they believe or think. Back in the 1920s, this was unheard of and even considered illegal depending on the circumstances, but the more modern america takes these new ideas and allows them to be expressed with out being arrested for having their own opinion.
