First they Killed My Father: I think that this was a very good book. It was intriguing so I had a hard time putting it down. It was nice to learn about how other countries differ from ours because I’ve pretty much been isolated to the United States. It really made me think about how fortunate I am to not have to face the adversities that Loung faced. There are some boring parts in the book, but for the most part, Loung was facing constant action. It is amazing to think that Loung probably went through more hard times and grief at the age of nine than many people will go through in their lives. I feel like a learned a lot from this book, and that I will look at countries in poverty in a new way.
A Midsummer Night’s dream: This book was better than I thought it would be. I thought it would be boring with the four lovers, but it turned out to be pretty funny. Most of the jokes that Shakespeare write are still funny today, and that is cool considering it was written four hundred years ago. I also like how Shakespeare manages to right all his plays in poetic form because that seems like an extraordinary feat. It’s definitely the best Shakespeare play I’ve read, mainly because of the humor and excitement.
Catcher in the Rye: I really like this book, and it is probably one of my favorite books. The way Holden speaks and thinks is interesting. It’s just something different from the bland narrative style that I’m used to reading. Holden is so out there, and his views on the public are something that I’ve never experienced before that it’s just fun to see what he will do next. I usually only like books if there is a lot of action, but this book is an exception to that rule for me. The way Holden goes against the grain just intrigues me because it’s unlike anything else. This book was just a great book in every aspect.
My Antonia: I thought this was going to be the worst book ever. The topic seems so boring yet it was so interesting. Her childhood didn’t seem that different from our generation despite it being 150 years ago. This surprised me and it helped me relate it a little bit. I liked learning about the immigrants the most because their lives can’t be replicated. It will probably be the last time that families will have make such big cultural changes. This book was still pretty boring, but I thought it would be much worse.
Inherit the Wind: I really didn’t like this book. It wasn’t interesting or exciting at all. The only part that was decent was the fact that Mr. Drummond was such a big underdog to Mr. Brady. It really showed that changes and progressions can be made because Mr. Drummond had almost no chance of winning yet he managed to get win. He didn’t technically win, but his point was made, and in many instances, small people like him won’t have a chance to even get their say in things.
