Mary Fons: I really liked Mary Fons. I felt that she really got into her poems, and they were really good because of this. With all of her emotion and expression that was put into these poems, it made it all the better. I think that my favorite poem that she shared with us was the poem Coat Check Girl. I thought it was really good how she would turn away from the crowd, and then get into the character that was needed at the time. It was a good poem because it showed us a little about her life in the past. She was very open with everyone, and she wasn’t scared to talk to us about her life and how some things aren’t working out. Also, it was really cool when she made a poem on the spot. When she did that, it really showed how much talent she has.
Dr. Small & Mrs. Hill’s Dad: Dr. Small and Mrs. Hill’s dad both wrote very good pieces. First off, I really liked Dr. Small’s poem about her farm. She got really in depth with all her details. I thought that when she talked about her horse, Molly, and she got emotional, that that was good. You could tell that what she was writing about really meant a lot to her. And I liked how she ended with her husband wanting a pig. It really finished the story off, and in all, I thought it was a good subject to write about. She had a lot of good information, and you could tell that she put a lot of time into the piece of writing. Second, Mrs. Hill’s dad did a really good job! I was thinking that his poem would be something boring and not funny, but it turned out to be the total opposite. He had a lot of good details that made everyone laugh, and a lot of memories that he, himself, can remember. Both of these new writers showed me that anyone can write. It doesn’t matter what, just express yourself and your feelings.
Jonathan Eig: I think that Jonathan Eig gave everyone a great example of how to find all of the correct information you need in order to get your facts straight. If you work hard toward what you want to find, you will eventually find it. Like Jonathan said, he was looking for specific letters for one of his books, and a week later he found the letters that archives have been looking for for years. I agree with Tori when she says that Eig has a lot of passion for what he does. Even though I’m not a hug baseball fan, I thought that he did a great job in finding his information and eventually writing a book.
Student Writers: The student writers that we saw during 1st period were really good! They all wrote about something that they had a lot of information and details on. But if I had to choose my favorites, I would have to say that Christine and Emily had very good pieces of writing. I really loved Christine’s story about her dog. It was a very sad story, but it was very well written. Also, I thought that Emily’s story about the pharmacy was really interesting and at some points, funny. I loved how she wrote about something that happens to her every time she goes to work. In all, the students had some very good pieces, and with all the pressure on being in front of hundreds of people, they were great.
Mr. Romano, Mr. Anderson, & Mr. Brewner: I thought it was pretty awesome that teachers from our school actually got up on stage and told us their stories. I really liked Mr. Brewner’s story about how his accident helped him get out of being drafted. I also really liked how it was based off of a lady that took a strange turn on the highway. Now, if this lady hadn’t done that, Mr. Brewner might have had to go fight in the war. I just thought that this story was really good, even though it was somewhat sad. All of these teachers did a great job in presenting their pieces, and just like Tori and Taylor said; it was great to hear stories and poems from the people that started Writer’s Week.
Overall, I loved Writer’s Week this year. I feel that I enjoyed it more this year, than last. I thought that the speakers that I saw this year were really good. Because some of my other teachers took us down to Writer’s Week, I was able to see some other speakers as well. Because of all the great poems and stories that everyone told, it just made me want to write a little more. Even though writing is not my favorite thing to do, Writer’s Week has inspired me to do so. Maybe in the future, I’ll have the courage to get on stage and recite my own piece of writing!
