Mary Fons: Mary Fons was definitely my favorite out of all the Writer’s Week performances. She was the most exciting and outgoing person there. I really liked how she was able to express her writing so freely. As she was reading her poetry, one could sense that she wasn’t even on stage anymore. It was as though she went to her own world and that’s what let her perform so well. Also, I felt that she was right when she said that there are many unique forms of writing out there and you don’t just have to stick to one type. She said that a lot of people try to do what they think others will like instead of doing something they like. I felt that she was correct in saying this because it is one’s individuality that makes them so great.
Faculty: I felt that Dr. Small and Mrs. Hill’s father did a great job in their writing. Although neither of them are writers and probably haven’t written stories like that in a while, they were still able to write in a way that would make us listen. They were both able to write in great detail and that’s what I really liked about them. Also, they didn’t seem too nervous when they got on stage. Furthermore, when Dr. Small was reading about how her horse almost passed away, she was able to hold back her tears and keep reading without fail.
Jonathan Eig: I think that Jonathan Eig was the most interesting author to hear from. The reason for this is because he talked about how much he had to learn in order to write a non-fiction book. Most of us don’t think about how much effort a writer has to put in to write a non-fiction book or a biography. Also, I liked how he discussed his past and how he used to be a journalist. It was really interesting how he does things that journalists do in order to get information about a topic that he is going to or thinking about writing.
Students: It took a tremendous amount of courage for the students to get up on stage and read some of their writing. A lot of people can write well, but not that many are able to present their writing in front of so many people. Also, considering the fact that the students are not published writers, I think overall they did incredible. It’s really difficult to share personal stories with others because there is always fear of being criticized. However, it seemed that all the students were very brave and they wrote well because of they were writing what they knew.
Faculty: I think that Mr. Romano, Mr. Brewner, and Mr. Anderson all had really good pieces of writing. They all also presented their writing like real writers and not like they were teachers just reading something to their students. I liked how all of them used their own personal experiences to write their stories. My favorite story was probably Mr. Brewner’s because I like how he used his injury, which is supposed to be a bad thing, and he turned it into something great that could be told as a story. I also agree with Tori, Taylor, and Sara and how it was fun and interesting to hear from the people who started Writer’s Week.
Overall, I really enjoyed Writer’s Week this year and look forward to it in the years to come. I love how we get the opportunity to listen to both professional and student writers. It’s also fun to see how many talented writers we have in Fremd and exciting to wonder how they might become the professional writers that return to Fremd to perform in the future. I agree with Sara on how she said that listening to everyone’s writing makes you want to start writing and performing as well. Writer’s Week is something we all should appreciate because it’s a chance to learn new things that can never be taught in a classroom.
