We're All Humans

Sometimes going against the crowd is what feels normal to a person. What may be right to someone could be extremely wrong to someone else. Every person was raised a different way and to have their own opinions and views. Statement 39 says “Part of ‘being human’ is doing something you know is wrong but still want to do it anyway”. I agree with this statement for many reasons. What is wrong is completely different in each individuals mind.

Now, why do people want to do what is wrong, even when they know they shouldn't? A main reason could be the sense of rebellion. When parents tell us to clean our room, do the dishes, or take out the dog, most of the time our reactions are to not do it. When a person does what is not expected of them, they could feel in control or powerful. Being humans, we naturally strive to be ahead of others. Going against the grain makes us stand out and be perceived as different. That puts us in a position where we are not like others and we feel authoritative.

Another reason why people might do what is wrong or different is because they feel that that is what is expected of them. When a person has made a mistake in their lives, people might start to believe that they are a failure. If you get a bad grade on a test, others could perceive you as lazy or stupid. If someone ends up in jail for a mistake they made, people expect them to be a screw-up for the rest of their lives. Having people tell you that you have failed is something nobody wants to experience. It can create thoughts in that person’s head that that is what they are always supposed to be like. They might think that if that is what people think they might as well portray it. Sometimes these types of people believe that no one has hope for them or that they will never succeed in anything again, so they simply act out.

Furthermore, people may do what is wrong to fit in to social standards. As I stated earlier, people have their own thinking processes and opinions and may want to stand out. On the other side of things, people could do the wrong thing to fade in. Many teens these days are scared of being different. They don’t want their peers to think of them as the weirdo or nerd. They want to be cool, whatever cool is to them. To some people, being cool could be the stereotypical party scene. Most of the time, they are made up of people who drink. A person who wants to fit in with this crowd might go ahead and drink even when it is against their best judgments. They understand that what they are doing is wrong, but do it anyways because they want to seem cool or popular.

Part of “being human” is doing something you know is wrong but still want to do it anyway. There are many different types of wrong or different, depending on the person. It’s in all of us. We might have to need to stand out, or simply fade in. We’re all human and we all have flaws. Different things affect the way we think, which affects our judgment of what is right and wrong.
