Mary Fons:
Mary Fons was an incredibly good speaker and writer. I also liked her metaphor for poems where she said that they are jewels in a box in her head and they take a while to make but are beautiful when they are done. I agree with Taylor that the poems Coat Check Girl and Fathers Day are more relatable to the audience. They were very emotional poems about real events which made her seem more down to earth. I also liked how she talked about how she had to name living artists and living poets but could not do that. Art is being made today and we are not keeping up with it.
Dr. Small and Mrs. Emily Hill’s Dad:
It was really cool to hear about our principles life because we often do not know much about our principles in school. Dr. Small has a very interesting life outside of school with the farm and all her animals. She did not like English in high school especially not writing but she decided to write letters to her distant family. She wrote a lot because she said that even though you might not like English or writing anyone can write if they find out what they like to write about and she did. Mrs. Emily Hill’s Dad was quite inspirational to me because I would like to become a mechanical engineer when I grow up and that is what he is and he is still a fantastic writer. Neither of them were professional writers but I liked them because they still shared their writing and were able to write pretty fantastic stories.
Jonathan Eig:
Jonathan Eig is a very good nonfiction writer in my opinion because he does not make up things that never happened. He searches for the facts so he can write about the truth. He really made me want to read some of his books because of that. I thought it was cool that he likes to write about men of action, American icons, and people who did not have much written about them. I like how he tries to represent the people he writes about with solid evidence and facts he finds.
Student Writers:
I thought Cristine Viet’s story was pretty sad but I could not relate to it very well because I have never had a dog. Diana Zheng’s story was similar to Mary Fons poem about her dad but at the same time they were different because Diana was looking for ways to fix her relationship and make it better. I liked how Diana said that her relationship with her father can never be perfect but will always have flaws and she says they just have to work through those problems. The stories in general from the students seemed to all have personal experiences behind them with made them more interesting and gave them feeling.
Mr. Romano, Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Brewner:
I did not like Mr. Romano’s story very much because it was very confusing and kind of hard to follow at times. I did like his performance though because his accents made it fun to listen to. Mr. Anderson had some good writing I liked it because it was about marriage which is generally a positive topic. I really liked Mr. Brewner’s story because it had me interested. It also showed an interesting message about life and how everything in his life was connected somehow and the motorcycle accident prevented him from being drafted.
Overall, I enjoyed writers’ week because it is different than the normal day in English class and we get to hear writing from all kinds of people. The different kinds of writers included people just writing notes to family, professional writers, student writers, and just people who write for fun. This writers’ week showed me mainly how everybody can write and should write. It is not only for people studying or teaching English or for professionals. I also learned that writing comes from the writers experiences in life even if it is a fiction piece of writing. Also I learned that to be able to write you need to find out what you like to write about. We also need to take the time to see and hear more of the art being made today such as poetry, painting and music.
